Business Looking for GM Business

Nov 27, 2010 (Kokomo Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Hundreds of Kokomo workers could avoid losing their jobs if General Motors Components Holdings is successful with a new business strategy to broaden its customer base, the company says.

The subsidiary of General Motors is seeking contracts with companies other than GM and Delphi Automotive, which were exclusive customers, Kent Eaton, personnel director for GMCH Kokomo Operations, said Friday.

"It is something new for us," he said. "GM is giving us the opportunity to pursue new business. The main reason is just to expand our portfolio."

The facility, which has about 700 hourly and 300 salaried employees, with some in Michigan, could have to undergo some retooling or retrain its employees to accommodate new clients' needs. The company would make those changes once it cemented deals with customers instead of making new investments before hand, Eaton said.

GMCH has formed a team of managers dedicated to expanding the company into industries such as automotive or telephone. The company is also considering selling into the computer industry, except for microprocessors because GMCH's technology isn't advanced enough, he said.

The company has yet to sign any contracts with prospective customers, Eaton said.

"We've talked to a lot of different people," he said. "One of the things in our favor, there is a shortage of semiconductor production."

GM in July announced it was "assessing its business model" at GMCH Kokomo, leading employees and the community to question the future of the facility. Automotive analysts at the time said the technology, notably the chips produced by the few hundred employees at the FAB III line, were becoming "outdated."

The life of the portions of the GMCH plant that remain in use should extend several years if the business plan is successful, Eaton said Friday.

"That's why we formed this team," Eaton said Friday, "to make sure we can retain the jobs we have. The next couple of years we have a pretty solid business plan. ... The longevity depends on the contracts we receive."

William Cory Stanley, the president of United Auto Workers Local 292, stated in an e-mail he thought the company was doing something positive by trying to find new customers. But he had some concerns because of the facility's history of only producing for GM or GM products.

"It is also evident that they won't let us build anything that is a competitor with GM or even Delphi," Stanley wrote. "We are forced to find new business in an adjacent market and this has its challenges. We also face many challenges when it comes to the design work on any proposed new business. We weren't left with much in the area of engineering design capabilities after our split from Delphi."

Stanley continued to state one of the union's largest "hurdles" was to retain or bid on new jobs because of possible wage and benefit concessions. He noted the union took a 50-percent wage cut three years ago.

"We continue to face some very large hurdles in our pursuit of new business," he stated. "I continue to believe that we can come to an agreement that will help us achieve success. This will take more than our willingness to give concessions. This will take both parties wanting Kokomo to survive. I'm still not convinced that everyone is on the same page when it comes to our survival."

Inventor Honored by President

In a parallel universe, a grilled cheese image of the Virgin Mary never sold for $28,000 after its image was uploaded on eBay. Wunderkind Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau never groped the chest of a cardboard Hillary Clinton on Facebook (at least not that anyone saw) and you never pretended not to recognize your boss on Match.com. That cousin? The one who apparently spends every moment of her awake time posting unflattering family reunion snapshots onto Flickr? In this parallel universe, that cousin has another passtime. She knits booties for your cat.

This odd false world - free from gourmands who photo-blog stylized meals, but also lacking joyous e-mailed images of new grandkids - bears only passing resemblence to the one we live in today. If we were making a movie about it, "It's a Wonderful Life"-style, this would be the world in which Steve Sasson had never been born.

In 1975, as a young engineer who had no interest in photography but had taken a job with Kodak because he heard Rochester was nice, he invented the digital camera.

"Nobody really knew what we were working on in that lab," Sasson says. "It's not that we were trying to be secretive, it's just that nobody cared. 'Why would anyone want to look at images on a screen? What's the point of an electronic photo album?' "

On Wednesday, in an evening ceremony in the East Room of the White House, President Obama awarded Sasson a 2009 National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on engineers and inventors. The other three medals went to the developer of dip-and-read urinalysis, the inventor of super glue, and the Intel team that first conceived of the microprocessor (Medals were also presented to winners of the National Medal of Science).

New Help for Small Businesses

WASHINGTON, Nov 19, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Small businesses interested in exporting now have a new online tool to help them tap into the global marketplace to grow their business. Developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration, Six Steps to Begin Exporting, www.export.gov/begin, is the latest tool in the National Export Initiative toolbox to help entrepreneurs begin exporting.

The six-step process begins with a self-assessment to help potential exporters gauge their readiness to successfully engage in international trade. The self-assessment is followed by sections on training and counseling programs; resources to create an export business plan; information on conducting market research; assistance for finding foreign buyers; and investigating financing for your small business exports, foreign investments or projects.

Upon completing the self-assessment, businesses receive a score indicating their level of readiness. Based on the score, additional resources are identified fitting their specific needs, including SBA and its nationwide resource partners SCORE and Small Business Development Centers, as well as Commerce's U.S. Export Assistance Centers, which provide individualized support.

"This practical, interactive website is just the latest example of the commitment the Obama administration has made to helping American businesses -- especially small businesses -- sell more of what they make around the world," U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said. "Connecting America's entrepreneurs and small businesses with new buyers and new markets abroad will help create jobs and spur sustainable economic growth."

"With nearly 96 percent of the world's customers living outside the United States and two-thirds of the world's purchasing power in foreign countries, tapping into opportunities in the global market makes perfect sense and is more attainable than ever for small business owners," SBA Administrator Karen Mills said. "One of the main hurdles potential exporters face is their fear that exporting is too complicated. This six-step process addresses and dispels that concern. Across the administration, we continue to strengthen the tools and resources so we can be the best possible partner in helping small business owners grow their customer base beyond our borders and, in doing so, create new jobs here at home."

This joint Commerce-SBA effort is part of an array of activities by federal agencies to support President Obama's National Export Initiative, which calls for doubling U.S. exports and supporting 2 million jobs over the next five years. So far this year, U.S. exports have increased nearly 18 percent compared to the same period in 2009.

President Obama has outlined five steps the Administration is taking to help U.S. firms expand sales of their goods and services abroad: creating a new Cabinet-level focus on U.S. exports, expanding export financing, prioritizing government advocacy on behalf of U.S. exporters, providing new resources to U.S. businesses seeking to export, and ensuring a level playing field for U.S. exporters in global markets.

Hero Born in Fire

TAMPA, Fla. -- An air conditioning technician is being hailed as a hero after saving four Tampa residents from a fire.

Authorities say the blaze broke out around 10 a.m. Saturday while Joe Ynocencio was working on a heater nearby. The 31-year-old former Marine heard a scream and ran to help. He found 56-year-old Graciela Verdugo inside the front door and helped her to safety. She told him about three more people in the house and Ynocencio went back in to get them: Verdugo's adult son, his girlfriend and a 60-year-old man on a walker whose relationship to the family was unclear.
A fire marshal's investigator says the fire was caused by someone smoking on a sofa on the back porch. Strong winds may have fanned it.
After firefighters arrived and put out the flames, Ynocencio returned to his repair jobs, despite a burned arm.

Company Works with Inventors

Miami, FL, November 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Steve S., a California resident and inventor, has enlisted the invention assistance skills of Miami, Florida-based NewProductHelp.com in promoting his Flag It invention to industry over the next 24 months. A simple yet effective new product sure to resonate with those who carry oversized loads in their tailgates, the Flag-It boasts a unique design that provides its users with a convenient and highly visible manner of alerting other motorists of the items they are transporting.

The Flag-It will be easy to implement and begin using on any oversized load, and will allow consumers to avoid receiving traffic citations for not having a visible notification of what they are carrying. It will also help avoid potential accidents on the road stemming from vehicles accidentally getting to close to the rear of a truck that has items protruding beyond its tailgate. With its overall collection of redeeming qualities, the Flag-It should have no trouble finding success through outlets and catalogs selling construction accessories.

The inventor has also developed a working prototype of the Flag-It, which is available for review under the appropriate terms and conditions of confidentiality.

This original idea is now being made available for licensing to manufacturers interested in new product development, especially in the construction accessories industry. Steve S. is hoping to have the Flag-It in full production and available to the public within the very near future.

Steve S. decided to contact Miami, Florida-based NewProductHelp.com recently to explore the possibility of contracting the invention assistance company to eventually represent his product idea to manufacturers in industry, with the ultimate goal being to secure a licensing agreement.

NewProductHelp.com assists inventors by providing them with industry experts who will guide them from the earliest stages of invention development to the point where there are professionally produced promotional materials regarding the concept. Due to the efforts of NewProductHelp.com, this inventor is now on his way to having his product idea potentially seen by thousands of industry professionals through a direct marketing program targeted to provide maximum exposure.

After including the inventor and preliminary, non-confidential information about his product idea at no charge for a 1 year term in their proprietary database of invention information, the National Directory of American Inventors, NewProductHelp.com’s professional staff of writers and graphic illustrators then created a New Product Portfolio and Online Product Presentation for his idea, helping to clarify how the invention works and looks. A General Field-of-Art search through the database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office was also completed by an independent, registered patent attorney in order to provide the inventor with perspective on some prior art within the general category of his idea.

Having had an opportunity to review and approve the New Product Portfolio and Online Product Presentation, Steve S. made a decision to accept NewProductHelp.com's New Product Publicity and Marketing Program proposal. Consequently, NewProductHelp.com will represent Steve S.'s Flag It for 2 years through a collection of dynamic promotional materials such as press releases, product brochures, digital renditions, a password-protected website, and other visual mediums such as a New Product DVD and potentially, an interactive virtual reality presentation.

The Flag It will be represented at industry-leading trade shows throughout the 2 year period by Miami, Florida-based Licensing Direct™, which serves as the exclusive licensing agent for NewProductHelp.com inventor clients. Licensing Direct™ will also be conducting follow-up with any appropriate manufacturer leads met at those events, as well as managing any advanced levels of interest displayed by manufacturers, marketers or distributors in the Flag It during the duration of the Publicity and Marketing agreement.

New Tires Unveiled

FINDLAY, Ohio -- COOPER TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY (NYSE: CTB) is introducing four new Cooper brand premium products at this week's Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. These products all feature Cooper's latest technical innovations and will launch in 2011.

"In our highly competitive and fast paced industry, we believe a genuine competitive edge can be obtained from the commitment Cooper has to providing our customers with a consistent supply of innovative new products," said Steve Sawyer, Cooper Tire's director of brand and product management. "The launch of four new premium products in one year is an unprecedented move for Cooper, and we are excited about not only the products but the market opportunities that they will provide our customers."

The first of four new products on display is the Discoverer A/T3 – All Traction, All Terrain ... All the Time! Launching in April 2011, it is the latest addition to Cooper's SUV and light truck tire lines as a direct replacement for the Discoverer ATR. The A/T3 uses a balanced combination of technology, compounding and design to produce a tire that provides confident all terrain performance. Its silica tread compound increases treadwear, improves wet traction and helps resist cutting and chipping. The modern tread design significantly improves off road traction without sacrificing highway performance. The A/T3 will be available in 30 SUV sizes and 32 light truck sizes ranging from 15 to 20 inch rim diameters.

Also on display, the new Discoverer S/TMAXX that will replace the successful Discoverer S/T-C and selected sizes of the Discoverer S/T. The S/TMAXX will feature Cooper’s proven and reliable 3-ply "Armor-Tek3" carcass construction, a new proprietary cut and chip resistant tread compound and a progressive tread design. With this combination, the S/T MAXX is destined to be a true commercial grade traction tire that will perform in the toughest terrains. This tire provides maxx toughness and traction with no compromises. Launching in February 2011, it will be available in 8 sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inch rim diameters.

Cooper will also unveil the Cooper Zeon RS3-A, which replaces the current Cooper Zeon Sport A/S. The RS3-A is the latest ultra-high performance all-season tire within the Cooper performance family. Combining large tread elements and asymmetric design, it provides all-season confidence in less-than-ideal weather conditions. The RS3-A's silica tread compound is designed for exceptional all season driving performance, while its advanced technology mold profile provides a square tread footprint, providing more tread-to-road contact. The RS3-A will be initially offered in 31 sizes and will launch April 2011. Additional sizes are scheduled for later in the year.

Also debuting in the Cooper booth is the Cooper Zeon RS3-S, replacing the current Cooper Zeon 2XS. The RS3-S is the latest ultra-high performance summer tire within the Cooper performance family. Building on the technology and performance of the Roush RS3 tire, the RS3-S offers a low-profile, high performance rating which combines world-class dry road traction, increased handling and exceptional cornering ability. Its silica tread compound is designed to provide superior wet driving performance, while the durable uniform tire construction delivers a crisp, tight steering response. The RS3-S will be available in 21 sizes and will launch April 2011.

The Cooper Tire booth can be found in the South Hall Booth No. 43009.
