Marines Collect Toys

Christmas cheer was in the chilly air as a parade of motorcycle enthusiasts toting toys entered the Beloit Marine Corps League Saturday.

“It’s not about the Marines or bikes, it’s about the kids,” said co-organizer Jodi Waldsmith.

Around 50 motorcycles and other supporters driving in warm cars pulled in for the 18th Annual Toys For Tots Ride. The motorcycles started at noon at 3 B’s Tap on County Trunk E, Janesville, and arrived at the Marine Corps League at 12:30 p.m. much to the delight of fans awaiting them.
Jodi Waldsmith and her boyfriend, Tim Thoftne, said they were expecting about the high amount of donations, but noted many people have left the area to find other jobs with the closure of Janesville’s General Motors plant. Thofne, for example, worked at GM for 23 years and relocated to Kansas City for a GM job last July. He had made the eight-hour drive to help support the event and see old friends.

Eric Anderson and Diane Liptow, dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus, were leading the parade by riding in a convertible. Anderson has volunteered at the event since its inception 18 years ago and was lugging in a bag of stuffed animals and meeting with kids. Anderson said he was preparing to do his volunteer duties at the event before stopping in to wish his friend Ray Brown of Beloit a happy 65th birthday.

The fun-filled day from 12:30 -4:40 p.m. included beer, food, Gray’s root beer, raffles, live music from the Bellcats and much more. Volunteers from Beloit Walmart were also on the scene to help with the event. Gray’s Brewing of Janesville had donated a keg of root beer for the 18th year.

By noon three banquet tables were already piling up with toys and monetary donations. All proceeds from the event will be used to purchase toys for charities in Beloit, Janesville, Evansville, Edgerton, Clinton and Milton. At the events close, volunteers were prepared to load up a semi trailer full of toys.

Although the Toys For Tots event has continued to grow over the last 18 years, the need for toys and cash donations for our Rock County families in need continues to grow at an even faster rate.

Anderson said organizer Cindy Waldsmith has done an exemplary job organizing the event.

In 1993 Cindy Waldsmith’s dad Marvin Waldsmith, a Marine, wanted to develop a fundraiser for a good cause that would include his children who rode motorcycles and his U.S. Marine friends, and Rock County’s Toys For Tots was born. Marv Waldsmith passed away prior to the 3rd annual toy ride and benefit, which has continued in his honor ever since and has raised more than $255,000 in money and toys for the many needy children he dreamt of helping.

Those who wish to write a check can make it payable to “Toys For Tots” and mail it to 1742 Ritsher St., Beloit, WI 53511. An account for “Toys For Tots” has been set up at Blackhawk Bank.

Stem Cell Product Research

OCEANSIDE, Calif., Oct 14, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- International Stem Cell Corporation (ISCO 1.37, +0.24, +21.24%) , www.internationalstemcell.com, and a new firm to be formed by John Mauldin announced today the formation of a new joint marketing venture to launch a line of skin care products developed by ISCO's wholly owned subsidiary, Lifeline Skin Care, Inc. ("LSC"). Mauldin, a significant marketing talent, is president of Millennium Wave Investments and author of an economic letter that goes to over 1.5 million readers.

Lifeline Skin Care's products have been in active development for well over a year and involve a unique high-technology, patent pending formulation for skin rejuvenation cremes, developed using ISCO's proprietary "parthenogenetic" stem cells that do not require the use of fertilized embryos. The product was discovered during ISCO's therapeutic stem cell research that revealed the stem cell's potential applications in skin cell rejuvenation. Part of the discovery included developing a way to surround the proteins from the stem cells with a nanovesicle allowing for extended shelf life and enhanced delivery of the product to the skin. Independent third party testing indicates that the cremes (one for day and one for nighttime application) have significant positive effects on the look and feel of the skin.

"This represents an amazing leap forward in the combination of a variety of cutting edge technologies to yield products that have the potential to find significant consumer acceptance. The anti-aging market is extremely large, and Lifeline Skin Care is offering something completely new and different. We are excited about the prospects," said Kenneth Aldrich, Chairman of ISCO.

Because the LSC products involve a unique extract from living parthenogenetic stem cells, rather than "off the shelf" ingredients used by most skin care products, it takes additional time to manufacture the products. Building inventory in advance of demand is critical to avoid disappointing customers.

ISCO and LSC believe the collaboration with Mauldin will provide a much broader potential customer base and a much lower market cost per customer than the alternative marketing programs previously considered. As a result, LSC has revised its previously announced marketing launch plans to be certain that it will have adequate product on hand to meet initial demand.

The initial product offering will be to ISCO's own database of investors and followers, originally set to launch October and now scheduled for November to coordinate with Mauldin's timetable. That will be followed with an offering to Mauldin's extensive subscription base and to a select market of other potential purchasers.

Only after these initial offerings have been completed, involving a total of over 1.5 million potential customers, will more broad scale product offerings be made. "This will enable us to measure probable future demand, assure our loyal investors and Mauldin's subscribers and affiliates that they will be able to purchase all the products they require while allowing LSC to build an inventory of the unique stem cell extract that is at the heart of this new product," said Dr. Ruslan Semechkin, CEO of Lifeline Skin Care.

"We are extraordinarily excited to be able to offer LSC's products to our loyal client base in a way that assures they will be able to obtain the product they want, plus monthly refills as required, in spite of the fact that LSC's products are unique and require time and care by many people to bring to market," said John Mauldin, founder and Chairman of Millennium. "This is a truly revolutionary approach to skin care. Early test results are very promising and I am excited to be associated with a company of the scientific reputation of International Stem Cell Corporation and their world-renowned staff."

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL STEM CELL CORPORATION (ISCO.OB)

International Stem Cell Corporation is a California-based biotechnology company focused on therapeutic and research products. ISCO's core technology, parthenogenesis, results in creation of pluripotent human stem cells from unfertilized oocytes (eggs). These proprietary cells avoid ethical issues associated with use or destruction of viable human embryos and, unlike most other major stem cell types, can be immune matched and be a source of therapeutic cells with minimal rejection after transplantation into hundreds of millions of individuals of differing racial groups. ISCO also produces and markets specialized cells and growth media for therapeutic research worldwide through its subsidiary, Lifeline Cell Technology, and is developing a line of cosmeceutical products via its subsidiary, Lifeline Skin Care. ISCO is advancing novel human stem cell-based therapies where cells have been proven to be efficacious but traditional small molecule and protein therapeutics have not. More information is available on ISCO's website, www.internationalstemcell.com.

BiddingforGood.com

Ever dream of owning your own private island? Or how about a Paris Hilton-autographed stapler? Such a stapler (see photo above) went for $4,101 on a bidding and auction website. But wait. Before you throw your own stapler at the wall, it may help to know that someone's fascination with the party-hopping heiress actually did some good.

BiddingForGood.com, which dedicated its entire business model to benefiting those in need, passed a major milestone today of $100 million in funds raised to support charities and schools across the USA. The "shopping for good" platform connects consumers and marketers to thousands of non-profit auction events each day.

According to the company, top-selling auction categories include travel, dining and, yes, unique one-of-a-kind items such as the Hilton stapler or experiences such as a meet-and-greet with Lady Gaga. Driven by proprietary algorithms developed in partnership with a professor at the Harvard School of Business, the platform's ability to help others often gets bidders revved up.

"What I love about BiddingForGood is the combination of great items and giving back. I visit every day," says Scott Allen, a regular bidder from San Diego.

This enthusaism has led to big returns for non-profit partners. According to the company, clients have raised $61 million in reported sponsorship revenue, almost $500,000 in cash donations, and slightly less than $250,000 in ticket sales from their fundraising platform.

"Online is where the world is going," said Jennifer Nelson of Cancer Community Center in South Portland, Maine. "We have gotten more bids, raised more money and delivered more value to our item donors by using BiddingForGood"

New Insurance Available for Used Trucks

American Truck Protection (ATP), a division of truck warranty leader National Truck Protection (NTP), today announced the introduction of a new coverage class of warranties called TITANIUM.

ATP created the TITANIUM package in response to its customers’ requests. “Our customers told us that they needed a warranty that had more coverage than the standard ATP line, but not as much coverage as the comprehensive NTP line, so we created a new product that is exactly what they are looking for,” said Robert S. Amico, president of NTP. “In essence we created an ATP hybrid that is a natural brand extension, and this product directly responds to their needs,” he continued. “To my knowledge, we are the first company to custom tailor coverage in this way. In some ways, the creation of TITANIUM can be characterized as mass customization, he added”.

The ATP and NTP products provide specific solutions to specific customer needs. The company boasts the most extensive as well as comprehensive coverage options in the industry. “We are confident that the addition of TITANIUM will indeed satisfy the needs in the marketplace and enable us to continue our strong pattern of growth,” Amico continued.

In just eighteen months, ATP has become the fastest growing independent provider of warranties in its category and the company continues to lead the segment with new product and service offerings. ATP was founded to fill an underserved segment of independent used truck dealers. Since ATP’s inception, the company has signed an impressive list of more than 500 registered dealers. ATP warranties feature quick inspections, easy claims processing and, perhaps most importantly, a significant value-add to any used truck.

About NTP Inc.

NTP Inc., based in Cranford, NJ, is the leading independent provider of warranty and service contracts to the North American trucking industry. NTP, celebrating its 26th year, provides private label warranties to major OEMs as well as extended service contracts to the used truck segment through its extensive network of corporate and independent dealers. GPS Golf Gadget Now Taking Orders

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Now that Michael Owens has moved the production of his invention out of the garage workshop of his Pawleys Island home, he's prepared for the GPS Quick Clip to explode in popularity.
Until he hired Wright Plastic Products in August to produce them, Owens had been making rudimentary versions of the device that securely holds personal golf GPS devices and laser rangefinders in place on golf carts.
Wright, an automotive interior parts producer in the Detroit area, is producing the GPS Quick Clip through an injection molding process. Owens has an outstanding order of 1,200 units of the universal mount, which he sells for $29.95.The GPS Quick Clip easily attaches to a golf cart side post by means of a small but powerful neodymium magnet with 50 pounds of pull. The clip is compatible with hand-held GPS units produced by all the leading manufacturers including Skycaddie, Garmin, Golf Buddy, SonoCaddie and Bushnell. Owens is in the process of making a heavy-duty Quick Clip for heavier range finders, including the Bushnell Medalist.
The popularity of the GPS Quick Clip was boosted with its selection as one of the three best new golf products for 2010 out of more than 250 new golf products at the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., in January. The honor was voted on by show attendees, and since the PGA Show he has sold more than 2,000 units produced mainly in his garage.
"It was amazing," Owens said of the Merchandise Show. "It was expensive, but it was the best thing I ever did, just for the business and contacts."
Owens rented a 3-by-3-foot space in the new-products section near the entrance of the show, and also had a 10-by-10 booth elsewhere on the showroom floor. He brought a couple hundred GPS Quick Clips and gave most away to pros, many of whom have ordered them to sell in their golf shops.
The idea to make the first Quick Clip came to Owens a couple years ago while he was playing at True Blue Plantation with a friend who was using a cart mount for a Skycaddie that Owens considered flimsy and unreliable. He also saw other friends putting GPS units in their pockets, in cart cupholders, seats or open spaces in the dashboard area.
GPS units can be viewed in the Quick Clip mount without removing if carts can be driven to the ball's location.
Owens created about six prototype versions of the mount in his garage over several months and gave them to his friends to test on the course.
He has filed a trademark and has a patent pending, and he estimates he has spent about $45,000 getting to this point with his invention.
"The patent was not expensive, but the patent attorney was expensive," Owens said.
Among his expenses, he said he paid $5,000 for a patent attorney, $11,000 to create the injection mold, and about $8,000 for the PGA Show including travel expenses. Creating a website was also costly.
"I'm spending my retirement money. My IRA is dwindling," Owens said. "Fortunately the stock market is coming back a little bit. I'm hoping to be able to put money back into my IRA account with the current marketing campaign we have."
Owens has hired John Brand of Brand Design Inc. of Washington, D.C., to be the marketing director for the product. "I can't do it myself and have no clue how to do it," Owens said.
The GPS Quick Clip is available at GPSQuickClip.com, at some golf course pro shops and in some retail stores, though few are on the Grand Strand. There is a list of carriers on the product's website.
The Quick Clip is not in Golf Dimensions, PGA Tour Superstore or Dick's Sporting Goods, but Owens is working on contacting company executives to get his product in those stores.
"I wasn't really able to contact anybody up until August because I was making them in my garage," he said.
Owens recently bought a list of 21,000 e-mail and mailing addresses of Skycaddie purchasers, and he's initially mailing sales brochures to 3,000 people on the list. He said research shows 5 percent to 7 percent can be expected to purchase a Quick Clip, but he's hoping for a higher percentage.
Owens, 61, has received the support of his wife of 39 years, Donna, in the GPS Quick Clip endeavor, and said that even if he knew the eventual cost he'd do it all over again.
"Yeah, I would have done it anyway," Owens said. "Everybody that has come in contact with it thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. I get e-mails from people just about every day telling me how much they like it. Things like that keep me going."
He's hoping the product continues to gain exposure and popularity. "I just don't know how long it's going to take," Owens said. "I'm hoping to make a lot of money, but I'd like to just break even. A lot of people lose a lot of money with inventions. It may be a year or two before it really takes off. What I really want is for someone to buy the patent from me."
The GPS Quick Clip has a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee as well as a lifetime repair warranty.

Eva Mendes Credits Angelina Jolie with Charity Inspiration

Eva Mendes has credited Angelina Jolie with inspiring her celebrity peers to help good causes - because the philanthropic actress has made charity work "cool."

Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations and travels across the world for good causes.

This year alone has she visited refugees in South America, displaced children in Haiti and flood victims in Pakistan.
And Mendes, who has signed up to work with sick kids through the Art of Elysium Foundation, admits she is thoroughly impressed with Jolie's efforts to make the world a better place.

She tells Fox News, "I have to say that Angelina Jolie did something really interesting when she became 'Angelina Jolie.' She took all that light and attention she was getting and she shined that light on important causes. I think that's pretty incredible and she was the one that made it cool to do all that."

Housing Discounts for Volunteer Hours

/newswire/ - Houston, TX, United States, 10/04/2010 - Preferred Corporate Housing, a nationwide furnished housing provider, is looking to ‘Pay it Forward’ by offering discounts on services in exchange for volunteer hours.

Preferred Corporate Housing, one of the nation’s premier temporary housing providers is launching a program that will give its guests the opportunity to receive a significant discount off their monthly housing rate in exchange for at least 4 hours of their time. They are calling the program, ‘Preferred Charity Helpers,’ which is a play on the letters from their business name (PCH). Through this program, Preferred Corporate Housing is partnering with Habitat for Humanity and Feeding America, along with various other organizations that offer volunteering opportunities all over the United States.

“We came up with the idea while trying to figure out ways we could get involved in our community,” said Samantha Elliott, President of Preferred Corporate Housing. “We provide temporary housing for people all over the U.S. in conjunction with relocations, temporary assignments, installation programs, and many other individual needs, so we thought this program would impact multiple communities an could create a viral awareness of how easy it is to get involved,” said Elliott.

Here’s an example of how the program works: A project manager from Houston has been assigned a temporary project in St Louis, MO, so he is staying in a fully furnished PCH apartment. He is away from his family, and doesn’t have much of a social life while he’s there, but is always looking for something to do on the days he is not working. Through PCH’s Online Housing Manager and Preferred Charity Helper webpage (corporates.com/charity.php), he can search for local volunteer opportunities from various charity organizations, and in exchange for his volunteer time, PCH will discount his rent.

“We call it a win-win-win solution,” said Michelle Velasquez, Special Projects Coordinator at PCH. “Local communities and volunteer organizations get qualified volunteers, our guests receive discounted rates which they can take back to their corporate offices and budgets, and by facilitating this process, we have planted a seed about the good that can come from community involvement. We’re hoping this program will create a viral movement, and that our guests will take their stories and savings back to their corporate offices and entice other coworkers to get involved as well,” said Velasquez.

In conjunction with the launch of the Preferred Charity Helpers Program, PCH employees will volunteer at the Houston Food Bank on October 9th, 2010. For more information about the Preferred Charity Helpers Program, please contact Michelle Velasquez at (800) 960-0102.

New Zealand Businesses Raise $1 Million for Charity

New Zealand businesses have raised $1 million for victims of the Canterbury earthquake.

Celebrities and business figures were out in force at last night's Canterbury Benefit Dinner at Auckland's Sky City.

Prime Minister John Key helped raise funds, with opportunities to dine with him fetching over $70,000 combined in the fundraising auction.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker attended the event and thanked New Zealanders for their generosity.

All the proceeds will go to the Canterbury Mayoral Fund.

It was a Who's Who of New Zealand celebrities and business figures who pulled their wallets out at the dinner.

One of the people up for auction took time out of a busy schedule to be there.

With the Bathurst 1000 roaring into action this weekend, Greg Murphy is hard at work but a few laps with Murph was snapped up for $10,000.

Murphy said he is a proud Kiwi and knows a lot of people in Christchurch. He guaranteed the winning bidder would have a good time but warned that he "doesn't do soft rides".

Musician Gin Wigmore said she only had a dollar to her name, but supported the event by performing.

Two VIP tickets to next year's first Bledisloe Cup test were also in demand and raised $9000, as did two premiere tickets to a Glee concert in Los Angeles.

The night was expected to provide a significant boost to the Christchurch relief fund and a morale boost for the residents of Canterbury.

Modified Chopsticks Wins Invention Competition

An 18-year-old Taiwanese girl who invented a pair of modified chopsticks has become the youngest medalist this year at one of Asia's largest invention shows that ended Sunday in Taipei.

Hsu Wei-ju won a bronze medal and two special awards in the categories of female inventor and young inventor at the Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart, the organizers announced Saturday.

"The award took her by surprise and it is her first invention, " said her mother, who received the awards on her daughter's behalf.

"It took her six months to produce the chopsticks," she added.

The prize-winning chopsticks are made of medical-grade stainless steel, while most other metal chopsticks are made of industrial stainless steel. In addition, her mother said, most telescopic chopsticks on the market are inconvenient to wash, but Hsu's design improves on this flaw, making them easier to clean.

A total of 962 entries from 18 countries took part in the competition, with 832 entries from Taiwan and 130 entries from other countries, featuring more than 2,000 new inventions and technologies.

Blood Diamond Controversy with Charity

Jeremy Ratcliffe, the former head of Nelson Mandela’s charity who admitted receiving uncut diamonds from model Naomi Campbell, was charged in a Johannesburg court this week.

Ratcliffe was charged on Sept. 28 with possession of uncut diamonds under the Contravention of Diamonds Act, Mthunzi Mhaga, spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority, said in a phone interview from Johannesburg today.

On Aug. 5, Campbell told the war crimes trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor that two strangers gave her some “dirty looking stones” after a 1997 dinner at the home of then South African president Mandela. She testified that she handed the diamonds to Ratcliffe, who was chief executive officer of Mandela’s charity at the time. Ratcliffe handed the diamonds to South African police on Aug. 6 after Campbell’s testimony.

Ratcliffe wasn’t asked to plead when he appeared in the Wynberg magistrate court this week, Mhaga said. The case was postponed until Oct. 27 to give Ratcliffe time to make representations to the head of the prosecuting agency, he added.

The Johannesburg-based Saturday Star, which reported today on Ratcliffe’s court appearance, said the charges carry a 10- year jail sentence.

Calls to the Johannesburg office line of Bridget Masango, spokeswoman of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, weren’t answered today.

Taylor is facing charges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, including enlisting child soldiers, murder and sexual slavery during the 1991-2002 civil war in the West African country, which claimed as many as 250,000 lives. He has denied the charges, as well as allegations that he provided weapons to fighters in the Revolutionary United Front, a Sierra Leone rebel movement, in exchange for diamonds.

Celebrities Support Aids Charity

With only one month to go, pregnant Alicia Keys could be forgiven for wanting to stay home and put her feet up.
But the passionate star was dressed to the nines last night to host the annual Black Ball for her charity Keep A Child Alive in New York.
This year A-listers such as Beyonce and husband Jay-Z, Uma Thurman and Arpad Busson, Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson braved the high winds to raise funds for HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

The 29-year-old dazzled in a strapless grey lace Dolce & Gabbana gown with her hair elegantly swept up. She kept her footwear sensible though, in a pair of glittering flat sandals.
But he may want to watch out for notorious charmer Usher, who also sezied his chance to pose with the beautiful mother-to-be. The singer flirted and kissed a blushing Alicia, who looked thrilled by the extra attention.
And while Alicia looked picture perfect on the red carpet, her big name attendees did not manage the same dignified entrance.
Celebrities like Uma Thurman and Arpad Busson, actress Jane Krakowski, Whitney Houston and Sade almost got blown away by the incredible 50mph winds, that left them struggling to keep their hair and couture downs in place.

Charity for Children

BROOKSVILLE — Monster Transmission and Performance started eight years ago as a small family business. Since then, the business has outgrown two buildings and moved to its third facility six months ago, next to the Hernando County Fairgrounds. It now boasts about 25 employees.

To thank the community and raise money for children's charities, Monster has teamed up with its neighbors at the fairgrounds and will present the first Monster Auto Show and Children's Charity Event on Saturday.

The daylong event will include a car, truck and bike show, an all-day truck pull, a truck tug-of-war, live entertainment, a petting zoo, and a large kids area with bounce houses, inflatables, face painting and balloons.

Music will be provided by various bands throughout the day, with Thunderstruck, an AC/DC tribute band, headlining.

"We've done (community) projects in the past, but nothing of this magnitude," said Achilles Thomas, the owner of Monster Transmission. "It's coming along surprisingly well, considering this is our first time."

Thomas said the Speed Channel's Two Guys Garage show, with hosts Bryan Fuller and Kevin Byrd, will be filming Saturday morning at Monster Transmission, then throughout the day at the fairgrounds.

"They should be at the fairgrounds around noon," Thomas said, "and will be signing autographs and taking footage."

The car, truck and bike show is expected to be large. More than $10,000 will be awarded in cash prizes and giveaways. Entry fees are $20 for cars and trucks and $15 for bikes; registration can be done in advance or at the show.

Thomas said about 100 vehicle owners have already registered, and he expects many more to register at the event. "They're coming in droves," he said.

Also joining forces with Monster's event is the Hernando County Fine Arts Council, which has organized an art contest for Hernando County students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Entries will be accepted through noon Saturday at the event, or can be dropped off today at Monster Transmission. Judging will be at 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded, and winning works will be displayed at Monster.

To cap the day's events, there will be a fireworks display at approximately 8 p.m. The show will be provided by Zambelli Fireworks, a national company that has provided fireworks displays at Walt Disney World.

"There's going to be a ton of things going on," Thomas said. "It's all coming together really nicely."

Proceeds from the day's events will benefit several children's charities, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Children's Home Society of Florida.
