New Zealand Businesses Raise $1 Million for Charity

New Zealand businesses have raised $1 million for victims of the Canterbury earthquake.

Celebrities and business figures were out in force at last night's Canterbury Benefit Dinner at Auckland's Sky City.

Prime Minister John Key helped raise funds, with opportunities to dine with him fetching over $70,000 combined in the fundraising auction.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker attended the event and thanked New Zealanders for their generosity.

All the proceeds will go to the Canterbury Mayoral Fund.

It was a Who's Who of New Zealand celebrities and business figures who pulled their wallets out at the dinner.

One of the people up for auction took time out of a busy schedule to be there.

With the Bathurst 1000 roaring into action this weekend, Greg Murphy is hard at work but a few laps with Murph was snapped up for $10,000.

Murphy said he is a proud Kiwi and knows a lot of people in Christchurch. He guaranteed the winning bidder would have a good time but warned that he "doesn't do soft rides".

Musician Gin Wigmore said she only had a dollar to her name, but supported the event by performing.

Two VIP tickets to next year's first Bledisloe Cup test were also in demand and raised $9000, as did two premiere tickets to a Glee concert in Los Angeles.

The night was expected to provide a significant boost to the Christchurch relief fund and a morale boost for the residents of Canterbury.
