Animal Shelters Need Help

The recession has forced the Southern Oregon Humane Society to give up plans to move to a larger facility.

The Humane Society purchased a 4.5-acre property in July 2006 for $2.35 million near the Medford airport to build a bigger center to spare more animals from euthanasia and increase the adoption rate.

But another $2.5 million was needed to build a new shelter before the recession forced the Humane Society to turn over the property in a short sale last December.

Bill Steele, the group's treasurer, says it has been difficult overcoming financial problems, but it hasn't affected the Humane Society's mission.

He told the Mail Tribune in Medford the organization has had a 65 percent increase in adoptions in the past three years.
