San Diego Students Study in the Heat

Most student services remained open at San Diego State University on Wednesday while repair crews worked to fix the air conditioning system, serving the central part of the campus. It was damaged by a water main break Monday night.

All employees were asked to report to work Wednesday morning and are to do so again Thursday, campus spokesman Greg Block said. Because of the current heat wave, however, nonessential staff and administrations were sent home at noon Wednesday, as they were on Tuesday, Block said. No decision has been made yet about sending workers home early Thursday.

Essential staff that remained on campus included those in public safety, financial aid and other student services such as the bookstore.

Classes start Monday, but Block said many students are coming to campus early to buy books and sign up for various services.

A 24-inch water line running under Centennial Walkway in front of the Student Services West building burst about 9 p.m. Monday. The flooding cut off air conditioning to 90 percent of the buildings located near the center of campus, but residence halls and athletics buildings were not affected, Block said.

Workers have to clear silt and dirt from the sinkhole that developed around the broken water line, then they can make repairs. Air conditioning should be back on by the end of the day Friday, Block said.

He said water flowed down the steps of the library, but only a small amount of carpeting got wet. Block said no other damage was caused inside any buildings.
